A Bit About Mount Lawley

Mount Lawley is part of the City of Stirling, sitting about five kilometres north of the Perth CBD with a population of roughly 11,000. It’s named after Sir Arthur Lawley, Governor of Western Australia from 1901 to 1902. The land was subdivided from 1892 by the Sydney & Perth Land Building & Investment Company, and the suburb grew through the early twentieth century into one of Perth’s earliest “streetcar suburbs”.

The traditional owners of this land are the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation. The wetland known to them as Boodjamooling — now Hyde Park, just across the southern boundary — was a long-established meeting, fishing and camping ground.

Beaufort Street is the suburb’s defining feature: a long, walkable strip of cafés, restaurants, wine bars, galleries and independent retail. It’s also one of Perth’s most architecturally rich streets, lined with heritage Federation, Art Deco, Californian Bungalow and Tudor Revival buildings.

The Astor Theatre, on the corner of Beaufort and Walcott, is the suburb’s landmark. Originally built in 1919 and remodelled in 1939, it’s listed on the State Heritage Register and remains a working venue for live music and film. The Mount Lawley Heritage Walk — ten bronze plaques set into the Beaufort Street footpath — tells the suburb’s story stop by stop.

Education is a major part of the suburb’s character. Mount Lawley Senior High School is one of the largest public secondary schools in WA, with around 1,900 students. Perth College — a private Anglican girls’ school running K–12 — sits a few blocks east. Mount Lawley Primary School and St Paul’s Catholic Primary School round out the local options. Edith Cowan University’s Mount Lawley campus — home to the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) — brings several thousand students and staff into the suburb daily.

Mount Lawley Train Station sits on the Midland line, with buses running constantly along Beaufort Street. By car, the CBD is five minutes via Beaufort Street or the Graham Farmer Freeway. It’s an inner-city suburb in every practical sense, but the streetscapes still feel residential — leafy, slow, and built on a human scale.
