A Bit About Scarborough

Scarborough takes its name from the English seaside town in North Yorkshire and has been a Perth beach destination since the early twentieth century, originally a holiday-home strip for families escaping the heat inland. It sits within the City of Stirling, in postcode 6019, and is home to around 17,600 residents with a median age of 36.

The traditional owners of this coastline are the Whadjuk Noongar people. The story of Tjunta — a spirit woman who finds a group of lost children — is told through sandblasted artworks across the Scarborough foreshore, starting near the Lotterywest Whale Playground.

The Scarborough Beach foreshore was redeveloped between 2016 and 2018 in a $100 million transformation that turned the precinct into one of Perth’s busiest coastal destinations. The result is a foreshore with a heated 50-metre beachfront pool (Scarborough Beach Pool), the open-air Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre, a major skate park (the Snake Pit), a climbing wall, the Lotterywest Whale Playground, BBQ facilities, basketball courts and tennis courts.

The Scarborough Sunset Markets run every Thursday evening from November to April along the foreshore, drawing huge crowds with over 60 cuisines of street food, live music, DJ sets and stalls. The Rendezvous Hotel — Western Australia’s only beachside high-rise hotel — anchors the strip and runs The Rendezvous Esplanade and The Boardwalk dining precincts beneath it.

Beyond the beach, Scarborough has a strong residential heart. Abbett Park is the sporting hub, with facilities for football, squash, lawn bowls, tennis and cricket. Scarborough Primary School and Deanmore Primary School serve the suburb directly, and Newborough Primary, Doubleview Primary, St Mary’s Anglican Girls School, Hale School and Churchlands Senior High School all sit within easy reach.

Transport is straightforward. Buses run constantly along Scarborough Beach Road, with the 990 bus connecting the beach directly to the Perth Bus Port. Stirling station on the Joondalup line is the closest train option, with bus connections through Glendalough. By car, the Mitchell Freeway via Scarborough Beach Road exit is the standard route from the CBD.
