East Perth is one of the city’s oldest suburbs and one of its most reinvented. Once heavily industrial, it was redeveloped from the late 1980s by the East Perth Redevelopment Authority into one of Australia’s most successful inner-urban renewal projects. Today it’s a high-density residential and commercial precinct of around 11,000 residents, sitting on the city of Perth’s eastern edge with postcode 6004.

The Whadjuk Noongar people are the traditional owners of this land. The Swan River — Derbarl Yerrigan — defines the suburb’s southern and eastern boundaries, and the riverbank has been a fishing, camping and gathering place for tens of thousands of years.

Modern East Perth is built around three main features: the river, Claisebrook Cove (an inlet redeveloped in the 1990s into a network of bridges, walkways and public art), and the WACA Ground — Western Australia’s historic home of cricket, opened in 1893 and still hosting domestic matches. Across the Matagarup Bridge sits Optus Stadium, the 60,000-seat stadium that took over international fixtures from the WACA in 2018.

Queens Gardens, on the southern edge of the suburb, is one of Perth’s oldest formal gardens – heritage-listed, with ornate gazebos and lily ponds and a long history of weddings and family photographs. The Perth Mint on Hay Street, dating to 1899, still refines gold and runs public tours. Gloucester Park, the harness racing course on Nelson Crescent, draws crowds every Friday night.

The free Red and Yellow CAT bus services loop through the suburb and into the CBD.
